Barcelona-based artists Rocío Maldonado and Mercedes Roglá establish a dialogue between their works in a daring joint exhibition that blends the artists’ past and present trajectories into a powerful artistic experience, rich in meanings and sensations.
Rocío invites us to discover «La Ruptura» (The Rupture), the second chapter of her project «La Búsqueda» (The Search).
In contrast to the first part, «Las Influencias» (The Influences), «La Ruptura» immerses itself in the human process of breaking free from the aspects of the past that condition and constrain us. The artist focuses on «leaving behind and breaking» the ties each of us forms through the experiences and influences accumulated in the early stages of life. This new beginning is both personal and artistic. The growth of the person gives birth to a new artistic stage, while artistic maturity in turn contributes to the evolution of the person. The Rupture gives rise to a new being and artist — more self-assured and free, having shed fears, insecurities and limitations.
Mercedes, in turn, presents her section, «La Emoción» (The Emotion), with a pictorial universe rooted in a poetics of sensation: her painting expresses different states of the soul — sadness and death as well as passion and emotion, fragility and beauty. Her style is instantly recognisable, close to Abstract Expressionism. The works embody emotions; they are textural paintings of intense colours with figurative undertones, typically accompanied by an energetic brushstroke placed entirely at the service of emotion.
Roglá: «I let myself be invaded by what surrounds me, I let it fascinate me and saturate me. It is such a physical process — it possesses me almost involuntarily, forcing me to pour it into each work through painting or whichever medium suits me best. Then I draw my conclusions.»
