In Transit - Luka Zubicaray

ESPRONCEDA – Institute of Art & Culture is proud to present In Transit, a solo exhibition by Luka Zubicaray, recipient of the 2025 Espronceda NEB Emerging Artist Prize. Born in Barcelona in 2005, Luka is currently in residence at Espronceda, selected through a rigorous curatorial process involving key voices from the local contemporary art scene.

In Transit is a raw and intimate exploration of Luka’s evolution as an artist. His work navigates themes of transformation—from boyhood to manhood, choice to responsibility, and desire to faith—through a series of evocative visual narratives. Each piece embraces imperfection as an essential aspect of creative growth.

“I’m still in the formative stage of my craft, which I thought would be interesting to showcase instead of trying to appear perfect,” Luka shares.

This honest, process-oriented approach invites viewers into the studio of a young artist who is still defining his identity and artistic voice.

The exhibition is part of No Position is the Opposition, a wider curatorial program spotlighting emerging Catalan artists who address critical contemporary themes such as identity, conflict, and ambiguity. Through hybrid media including painting, installation, video, and performance, the exhibition delves into the tension between personal experience and broader socio-political narratives.

In Transit also aligns with NEB & Inclusión 2025, Espronceda’s annual artistic research program inspired by the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative. This program focuses on social justice, diversity, sustainability, and innovation, reinforcing Espronceda’s commitment to inclusive artistic practice and accessibility for underrepresented communities.

As an official partner of the New European Bauhaus since its launch by the European Commission in 2020, Espronceda remains a hub for interdisciplinary dialogue and experimental art. The Espronceda NEB Prize for Emerging Artists provides young talents like Luka with studio space, curatorial mentorship, and a platform for public exhibition—empowering the next generation of cultural voices.
