RISE UP in Cornwall: A Celebration of St. Piran’s Day & Kernewek.

RISE UP in Cornwall

The RISE UP Travelling Exhibition officially launched its journey in Redruth, Cornwall, on March 5th. Arriving just in time for the St. Piran’s Day celebrations, the exhibition opened its doors at the Redruth Library, marking a powerful first stop in support of Cornish (Kernewek) and the resilient spirit of the Cornish people.

Hosted by the dedicated team at Redruth Library, the event transformed the local library into a space for artistic dialogue and cultural exchange. By joining the town’s patron saint festivities, the exhibition became a focal point for celebrating heritage through a contemporary lens.

As part of the RISE UP project — co-funded by the European Union — the exhibition showcases original works by five artists from minoritised language communities across Europe. Each artist was invited to reflect on two questions: What would you say to your community? What would you say to people outside your community?

Artists:

  • Teano Kardula
  • Ricard Novell
  • Lianne Wilson
  • Viktoria Ratasich
  • Yhely Hälvin

Through artworks and contextual panels, available in both English and Cornish (Kernewek), the exhibition opened a space for visitors to reflect on identity, language, and the power of community. The weekend provided a rare opportunity for locals and visitors to learn about shared lived realities across Europe’s diverse linguistic landscape.

Our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Redruth Library and the entire Cornish community for your warm hospitality and for making the first stop of our journey so memorable.
